I've seen the phrase "social betting" and "social sports betting" crop up in articles time and time again but I still don't understand what it is regardless of how many times I try to get my head around it. Can someone please explain to dumbo here exactly what it is? Is it gambling on Facebook?

Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is social betting is a way to bet on sporting events with your friends using virtual currency. You can create league tables with your friends to keep track of who's the most successful at predicting results. There are a variety of apps for iOS, Android and Blackberry that cover all the major leagues, including the Premier League, FA Cup, La Liga, MLB, NBA, Tennis, Formula 1, NASCAR and the NHL etc. Since these are only "play money" app there are generally available in the various app stores.

Facebook versions are also available, which make it even easier to connect with your friends.

is this just a cover for actual gambling. for example, do friends convert 100 virtual dollars into real dollars at the end of a game or season?

i read this article http://venturebeat.com/2013/05/06/draftkings-raises-7-million-for-daily-fantasy-sports-games/ on draftkings who run a social betting network where you bet on fantasy leagues. so far they have over 100,000 registered users who compete in baseball, football, basketball, and hockey leagues.

the strange thing is the offer cash prizes of millions of dollars. for the fantasy baseball season they plan to award over $20 million in cash prizes. isn't this just gambling? does it matter whether you are betting on an actual game or a fantasy game. is social betting thing is confusing.

I'm guessing that quiet a lot people use these apps as a way to keep a running tab of bets they place with friends. Before you would drunkenly make a bet in a bar and maybe forget the specifics by the next morning. These apps allow you to easily keep track of these type of bets.

Paddy Power have announced they will be releasing a facebook app shortly where users will be able to gamble for real money. The app will only be available online and in the UK initially but a mobile version is being worked on as we speak. This is bound to have tons of social betting features so if you want to get in on the action you should sign-up at Paddy Power and claim the £50 free bet to get things started. Remember, initially it will only be available to Facebook users in the United Kingdom.

I think Paddy Power have the right idea. Rather than getting people to download a separate app, why not piggyback on Facebook since it is already the world's biggest social network. Hopefully PaddyPower Social will be available soon in countries other than the UK.

We've been pretty impressed with the PaddyPower Facebook app. You can login with your regular account and see instantly which of your other Facebook friends are using the app. After that it's pretty easy to challenge them to a bet or mock their current bets. Here is a complete overview of their bookmaker app http://www.iphonebettingapps.com/paddy-power-mobile.html

the paddy power social facebook app is pretty useful. you can see which of your friends on facebook have the best record for picking winning bets and then copy their bets in a couple of clips. it's just a shame that the app is only available in the united kingdom because most of the bets are either on the english premier league or horse racing. i'd love if the app was available in the united states so i could see which of my u.s. based mates have the best record for betting on nfl or nba games.

The Paddy Power Social app is really useful to see which of your Facebook friends has the best betting record. You can then copy their bets in a couple of clicks if you like. I would have though Paddy Power would prefer to keep this type of information to themselves.

YouBetMe have added a cool new feature that lets you create challenge videos to bait your friends into taking your bet. If you win you can also create victory videos to further rub salt in the wounds.

PaddyPower have now withdrawn from real-money gambling on Facebook. Back in 2013 they launched their PaddyPower In-Play social betting app on the social network. Shortly after it was rebranded as PaddyPower Social and the company reported the app was used extensively during the Brazilian World Cup. Sadly their social betting experiment has now come to an end following the announcement that the Paddy Power Social app will no longer be available to social betting fans on Facebook.
