Since the launch of Windows 8 last week, the new Microsoft mobile operating system has been getting a lot of praise. Microsoft currently have a 3.5 percent share of the smartphone market, compared to Apple's 17% and Google's 68% share for their Android OS. Despite this Paddy Power have been busy developing a version of their popular Premier League app for the new mobile platform. Windows Phone users can now download the free app from the Windows App Store. The new Windows version allows users to get all the latest Barclays Premier League odds and information with just the swipe of a finger.

Does the Windows 8 app also have the sports detection feature that the iPhone version does that recognizes which game is being broadcast? Without that it's just another fixtures and results app.

    Hi Becky

No unfortunately the game detection element that is available on the iOS app does not appear to be present yet in the Windows 8 version. That technology is provided by a company called TvTak who currenly only offer their developers an iOS/Android software development kit.

Is it only the Premier League app that is available for Window's 8 phones? Is the regular sportsbook also available? I'm pretty tempted to buy one for Christmas but not if there aren't any sports betting applications available. Do any of the other bookmakers support Windows 8?

    Hi Tassie

For now Paddy Power only offer a their English Premier League app as an app although I'm sure they will release a full version of their sportsbook in the near future. They then to lead the way when it comes to mobile sports betting development.

  7. Probably a wise move. I read an article recently that said Windows Phone had overtaken Blackberry for the number 3 spot behind Android and Blackberry. I haven't tried the Windows Phone OS but I've heard good things about it.

Any idea when Paddy Power will be releasing their bookmaker app for Windows Phone? The web apps works pretty well but it would be nice to have a native Windows Phone app as well.

I think it's only a matter of time before we see all bookmakers releasing Windows Phone native apps. Windows Phone is now outselling Blackberry and is the 3rd most popular smartphone operating system behind Apple iOS and Google Android. Blackberry looks to be in serous trouble and may be sold or dissolved before the end of the year.

i can't see bookmaker going to the trouble to develop dedicated windows phone betting apps when the mobile os only has a 7% marketshare. it just wouldn't make any financial sense. mobile sites have improved greatly over the past couple of years so i think most bookies will only offer their software via a browser.

I agree that their marketshare simply isn't large enough the justify the massive spend on developing a dedicated Windows Phone native bookmaker app. Last year Microsoft purchased Nokia so we'll have to see if the software giants do a better job at marketing their smartphone and tablets.

It would be nice if Paddy Power developed a web version of their iPad app for tablets running the latest Windows 10. I really like how the Paddy Power iPad app is designed.

Unfortunately I can't see that happening given how small the Windows Phone market share is at the minute.

The new Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, is changing strategies for the Microsoft Lumia. Rather than going after the mass market that is dominated by Android and iOS, he is instead switching focus to business and low-cost devices. Nokia had a large market share in the developing work so it makes sense that Microsoft would work hard to retain that market share. If they succeed then there is a possibility that Microsoft Lumia could succeed, just not in Europe or the United States.
