Sweden has a reputation for being a very free and open country so it came as a surprise to learn that the Swedish Gaming Board has asked Apple to remove real-money poker apps from companies such as PokerStars, 888, UniBet, PartyPoker and William Hill. It turns out that Swedish government currently runs a state monopoly when it comes to land-based, online and mobile gambling. With a population of over 9 million people, Sweden represents a relatively large market from mobile poker sites.

Since the Swedish States monopoly on gambling goes against EU competition laws, the European Commission has deemed their position to be illegal, so it still remains to be seen whether they will be able to continues with this policy in the long-term.

this seem ludicrous and totally pointless in an era where more and more betting sites are developing web-based sports betting, poker and casino apps that don't require approval from apple. android has 85% market-share. how are the swedish government going to prevent samsung galaxy or htc users from downloading gambling apk files from online sites.

The Swedish government has now reversed it's decision and gambling apps are available again in the Swedish iTunes App Store. Following the withdrawal of the The Swedish Gambling Authority's legal challenge, Swedish citizens can now download popular gambling apps from major operators like Unibet, William Hill and PokerStars again.

it's ridiculous that in an era of thor, bitcoin and html5 apps that governments would think they can control what people do online.

Bitcoin bookmakers are going to become increasingly popular if governments keep cracking down on internet gambling sites. Bitcoin sportsbooks like Nitrogen sports offer web apps that work just as good as anything from Bovada or Ladbrokes.

The United States should follow the Scandanavian model and introduce state run online sportsbooks and poker rooms. Once the dollars start flowing into each states coffers they will quickly forget about their moral stance against gambling.

  8. Every country is starting to ask apple to remove real money gambling. It must be their way to protect their land base casinos. But since Swedish government is under EU they need to follow what EU says otherwise do what London did.
