William Hill criticised for pop up ads that redirect iOS users to install their app

I think most of us have had the frustrating experience of being redirected to the App Store while reading an article on our iPhone or iPad. Typically I get prompted to install apps like Candy Crush and Zelda Dungeon by a pop up redirect while I'm reading a completely unrelated article. It now appears that William Hill are being accused of participating in these shady activities after thousands of iPhone and iPad users have been redirected to the William Hill mobile app due to ads appearing on apps from respected websites like The Guardian, Huffington Post, Radio Times, Glinner and Salon.

It should be noted that William Hill are denying that this type of marketing is intentional and are working to resolve this technical glitch.

I do find these type of redirect ads extremely annoying and they have the opposite affect on me. After being redirected a few times I develop a deep hatred of a particular app and would never install it. If the William Hill app was good enough then they wouldn't need to use these type of underhand tactics to drive people to their mobile sites.

WH have stated that these ads aren't intentional and are the result of a technical problem. Whatever the truth is, I think the negative backlash this is getting will force them to stop these ads sooner rather than later.

Malicious ad injection is being an increasingly greater problem. Gangs are exploiting flaws in modems and routers to inject redirects and ads where they shouldn't be.
