What happens if my iPhone gets stolen? Can someone else use my bookmaker app?

I'm a little wary about signing up for a bookmaker app because I'm afraid that my phone might get lost or stolen? Should I be worried?

I know I'm probably worried about nothing but if anyone could put my mind at ease I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks

There shouldn't be a problem because sports betting apps ask you for your password before they allow you to place a bet.

Here are a few easy to follow safety precautions you should take when using any type of gambling app...
    • Don't store your username and password anywhere on your iPhone
    • Pick a strong password
    • Active "Find my iPhone" from the setting menu of your iPhone. This will allow you to easily find your iPhone in the event that you lose it. If the iPhone is stolen it will let you remotley wipe all the data from your iPhone.
    • If you are particularly forgetful and make a habit of losing your iPhone it may be worth adding a password to the homescreen
    • Your password for your bookmaker app is the same as the password for your online account. If you are concerned that your mobile account may have been compromised, login to your online and account and change your password.

If anyone has any other suggestions please let us know.

I know some online casinos can deactivate mobile play if you contact their customer service. That means that you can continue playing online on your desktop or laptop but mobile play will be disabled. Pretty useful if you lose your iphone or ipad but don't want to completely close your account.

I think having a gmail app on your iphone is the biggest security concern if your phone gets lost or stolen. I signed up for most poker and bookmaker apps using my gmail account so there is a copy of the account creation e-mail, along with my username and password in my gmail account. The gmail app usually did not require a password so anyone who stole my iphone would be able to access my e-mail and retrieve a lot of login details for various accounts. For this reason I deleted my iPhone gmail app.

If you know 100% that your phone has been stolen I think the safest to do is do a "Remote Wipe" You can do this over the web by logging into the iCloud and selecting "Find My iPhone". You should see an option for "Remote Wipe" which will permanently wipe all the information on your iphone. This can't be reversed so be sure you haven't just temporarily misplaced your phone.

I don't think it will be a problem because from my experience betting apps log your out automatically after 5 minutes so unless you're daft enough to store your account information on the phone then there is virtually no chance of a security breach.

My iPhone was stolen recently and although I wiped all the data remotely I still logged into all my online and accounts and changed my password immediately as an extra precaution. You mobile password is the same as your online password so once you change it your account information should be pretty safe.

And remember to use the Find My iPhone feature, you don't need to run home. You can login to the Apple iCloud from a friends phone or just go into an internet cafe nearby.

Apple seem to be finally taking this seriously with iOS7. Users will need a real owner's ID and password before an iPhone can be wiped clean and reactivated after it has been disabled remotely. It was far too easy in the past to just wipe the phone and reinstall a fresh version of iOS.

The good news is Apple seems to be getting their act together when it comes to stolen iPhones. With the latest iPhone 5S and iOS7 you will need an activation code before they can reactive a new iPhone.

It would be great if Apple also opened up their new Touch ID technology to third party apps. It would make bookmaker or any type of gambling apps much more secure if you needed a persons fingerprint in order to login to an app.

The latest Apple devices come with an "Erase you device" option that allows you to remotely wipe your device after it was stolen. This is achieved by logging into your iCloud account and then choosing the correct device to wipe. Remember that you can't undo this action so you better be sure that your phone isn't just behind one of the cushions of your couch. All the latest Apple devices can be wiped, including iPhone, iPad and Macs.

Good advice! You should also activate "Find My iPhone" through the iCloud as soon as you get a new iPad or iPhone. So many people forget until their phone is lost or stolen and then it's too late.

It appears that these kill switches have proven to be highly effective. According to this article on MacRumours, thefts of iPhones in London have dropped by 50% and by 25% in New York following the introduction of the activation lock. Following the success of the iPhone kill-switch both Google and Samsung have committed to adding the technology to their phone also.

Yes. You can temporarily block your iPhone while you search for it.

  16. You should always have 2 Factor authentication enabled on your smartphone.
